Directors - Matthew Pope; Rating - 33 votes; ; Genres - Thriller, Crime; countries - USA; 2019. Blood on her name yellow veil. Posted on Sunday, February 9th, 2020 by Let us round up some trailers, shall we? Rather than give these titles their own individual posts, we decided to wrangle them together in one spot. Why? Because they were lonely, and everyone needs a friend. Thats why. Below youll see trailers for a Beastie Boys documentary, the indie curiosity  Swallow, a new  Ghost in the Shell anime, yet another   SpongeBob film, and a thriller called Blood on Her Name. Swallow Swallow is bound to garner some attention. Dig the synopsis: “On the surface, Hunter (Haley Bennett) appears to have it all. A newly pregnant housewife, she seems content to spend her time tending to an immaculate home and doting on her Ken-doll husband, Richie (Austin Stowell. However, as the pressure to meet her controlling in-laws and husbands rigid expectations mounts, cracks begin to appear in her carefully created facade. Hunter develops a dangerous habit, and a dark secret from her past seeps out in the form of a disorder called pica – a condition that has her compulsively swallowing inedible, and oftentimes life-threatening, objects. ” I mean, how can you not want to watch that? The film, which was directed by Carlo Mirabella-Davis and stars Haley Bennett, Austin Stowell, Denis OHare & Elizabeth Marvel, has been picking up good buzz on the festival circuit. You can finally catch it when it opens in theaters and on VOD March 6. Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Netflix has a new anime series,  Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, arriving this April. I know nothing about anime, or  Ghost in the Shell, but I know many, many people will go gaga over this news, and this trailer. Heres the synopsis: “In the year 2045, the world has entered a systematic “Sustainable War. ” Hired as a mercenary unit, the former members of Japans elite Section 9 are faced with the sudden appearance of “Post-Human, ” a being with tremendous intelligence and physical capabilities. ” Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is streaming worldwide April 2020, Only on Netflix. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run I dont know who is still clamoring for more  SpongeBob movies, but heres a new one. And  SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run is “ the first-ever all CGI SpongeBob motion picture event, ” so it has that going for it. In  Sponge on the Run, “After SpongeBobs beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove theres nothing stronger than the power of friendship. ” In addition to the usual cast of characters, the movie also features appearances from Keanu Reeves, Awkwafina, and Snoop Dogg. Look for it on May 22, 2020. Blood on Her Name In Blood on Her Name, “A womans decision to cover up an accidental killing spirals out of control when her conscience demands she return the dead mans body to his family. ” But if that one-sentence summary doesnt do it for you, heres a longer synopsis: The dead body lies at her feet, its blood still draining onto the floor… It was an accident, borne out of self defense, but its discovery could have devastating consequences for local garage owner Leigh Tiller (Bethany Anne Lind) and her son. In a panic, Leigh decides to conceal the crime, cleaning the bloody scene and scrambling to dispose of the body. But can she actually disappear a man from the earth— from his family— leaving them forever wondering? As Leigh is torn between her primal instincts and tortured conscience she struggles to keep her sins hidden from her estranged father– a cop with a long history of moral compromise (Will Patton)– and from the keen-eyed girlfriend of the deceased (Elisabeth Rohm. Blood On Her Name is a character-driven thriller that explores questions of guilt, moral identity, and the irrevocability of choices in the direst circumstances. The film, which was directed by Matthew Pope, arrives in theaters and on VOD on February 28. Cool Posts From Around the Web.

The killing wasnt planned, it was an accident, borne of self-defense. In a panic, she decides to conceal the crime. Soon after, shes struggling with regrets. Not to do with her attackers death, but about the fact that her actions have condemned his family to a tortured life of not knowing what happened to him, consumed with trying to make sense of a sudden disappearance that cant be explained. Leighs screaming conscience will lead her to make a series of decisions that put her and her son in mortal danger as she tries to keep her guilt hidden from her cop father (Will Patton) and the widow of the deceased (Elisabeth Rohm. Will she find a way that she can live with herself? Will she live at all? A sad, soulful crime drama about choice, guilt and consequence, imbued with a creeping sense of damnation that will haunt you to your core, BLOOD ON HER NAME is a scorching feature debut for director and co-writer Matthew Pope. Its an intimately powerful film, an engrossing neo-Noir with Southern Gothic roots that functions as slow-burn character study, centred around an extraordinary performance from Lind, who reveals herself to be one of the most remarkable actors working today. Through her characters perspective, she and Pope deliver a compelling exploration of moral compromise steeped in a tone of defeated desperation that pulls us into its world without a single false move. This one will be staying with you long after the bruises fade. – Mitch Davis Showings 4:15 PM.

Blood on Her Name starts with a murder. Maybe manslaughter. Or perhaps, something in between. All we know for sure is, when this thriller starts, Leigh Tiller ( Bethany Anne Lind) has a dead body to dispose of, a son to protect, and secrets to keep. And shes completely out of her league, lacking the forensic skills and, worse, moral ambivalence to get the job done clean. A lowkey thrill ride that builds steady, quiet tension,  Blood on Her Name  thrives when it focuses on how utterly unprepared the average human is to do dirty deeds. Over the course of a tight 83-minute run time, director Matthew Pope (who also co-wrote with  Don M. Thompson) follows a fumbling everywoman trying to do the right thing, watching her devolve into a mess of conflicting stories, barely concealed panic, and resurfacing trauma. In her pre-corpse life, Leigh spent her days as the not-particularly-proud owner of an auto garage where her convict ex-husband used to do shady dealings. Saddled with that stigma and struggling to keep her humble business afloat, the single mother panics in her moment of crisis. With a dead body on her floor, she makes the regretful decision not to call the police and spends the next 80 minutes regretting that decision every step of the way. Image via Yellow Veil Pictures But its her first moment of regret that gets her in the most trouble. When she realizes the body belongs to a family, she cant face the guilt of leaving them without answers. So she gives the body back, like a total clown. You know what they say about good intentions, and  Blood on Her Name makes for a refreshing thriller because the lead character constantly paves her own road to hell by consistently making terrible decisions. But for completely understandable reasons. She is, essentially, decent and thats what dooms her from the start. Indies have long been home to solid thrillers; all you need is good performances, a tight script, intriguing mystery, and a solid sense of timing — all of which can be done of the cheap.  Blood on Her Name is right at home in that pantheon, lean and unadorned, but well-made, with a sharp eye for the small moments that can change, ruin, or end a life. The biggest problem is that indie thrillers are so prolific, its  really really  hard to make one that feels new.  Blood on Her Name never quite clears that hurdle. Youve probably seen a few versions of this movie before. But for a few inspired moments in the scripting, theres an undeniable familiarity to it all, and no matter how many see-through lies Leigh spins, you always have a good sense of where the films going from beat-to-beat. Fortunately, Pope does nice work baking that in, which means that if  Blood on Her Name  sometimes feels like re-treading familiar territory, it also conjures a steady sense of dread. You dont want to go down that road because you know whats waiting for you and its not good. And that feeling only intensifies as Leigh continues to pull the walls in on herself, building her own trap with each lie or spasm of honesty, both of which she always seems to deploy in the exact wrong moment. Pope also pulls some great performers out of his cast, and the film is at its best when it leans on their strengths, particularly as the threads weave together in the final act. Lind is subtle but compelling as Leigh; alternately icy and over-expressive with the slow-boiling panic of fear underneath.  Will Patton also gets a nice turn as her estranged father, the local sheriff whose position of power never quite offers the amount of comfort it should since he comes with his own heavy baggage.  Elisabeth Röhm also has some standout moments as the hard but grieving girlfriend of the deceased. Like the beats, the themes here will feel familiar to any fan of the genre. Crime is hard, humans are foolish and flawed creatures, revenge is messy, and guilt can be a killer. The classics.  Blood on Her Name is most effective when it digs into those themes and what they mean for the characters, and a bit less effective when it relies on the murder mystery angle. By the time we meet Leigh, the “why” doesnt really matter. All she cares about is “what now? ” and the film absolutely delivers every time it focuses on that question. The actions themselves arent all that interesting, but the consequences are spectacular. A slow-burn thriller that eventually sparks into something special,  Blood on Her Name takes some patience. Not just because of the stillness and steady pacing, but because Leigh can be a downright moron about her circumstances. But honestly, thats why I like the movie so much. Thrillers are all about putting average characters in over their heads, but rarely are those characters so devastatingly bad at crime as this poor woman. Its actually a very endearing and refreshing character turn in the end; a good lady in a bad situation, with none of the skills it takes to get herself out of it with grace. And that feels more honest, too. Most of us arent Liam Neeson. Wed absolutely botch an attempted murder cover-up, just like she does, and its fascinating to watch as Leigh just keeps shoveling. Thats a lot more intriguing than another steely protagonist with shockingly good aim and its what keeps  Blood on Her Name a gripping watch, even through the weaker moments. It might not be a winning mystery, but it is an evocative story of crime and punishment, choice and consequence, cycles of violence, and human failing. Fantasia 2019: BLOOD ON HER NAME Review – Southern Gothic with Small-Town Grit Starring Bethany Anne Lind, Will Patton, Elisabeth Röhm, Jared Ivers Written by Don Thompson, Matthew Pope Directed by Matthew Pope Leigh Tiller (Bethany Anne Lind) is introduced mid-crisis. Bearing the signs of a fresh fight, the film opens to her standing in an auto shop with a dead man on the cold, oil-soaked floor. Her fingers hover over her phone, with 911 only a tap away. Her next set of decisions dictate the course her life will take. She makes the wrong choice. Leigh is the pinnacle of a multidimensional character. Shes a single mom, struggling to keep her teenage son from following the path of his father who is in jail. Shes a small business owner, struggling to keep her mechanics shop in the black. Shes the daughter of the town sheriff (Will Patton) struggling to distance herself from him and the memories of their troubled past. Lind beautifully balances the strength and vulnerability of Leighs character. Underneath her stoic mask is a confused and conflicted woman, which Lind unveils through occasional glances at the traumatized girl lurking inside. Leighs journey is fraught with anxiety, guilt, and ambivalence. As the story uncoils, we learn more and more about Leighs complicated life. We replay that opening scene in the garage with a different set of eyes upon each new deposit of information. Blood on Her Name artfully exposes how many shades of morality can live inside a single human; how much contradiction can exist within a singular decision; and how precarious the definition of a good person can be. Blood on Her Name presents this landscape of textured humanity with straightforwardness. The visual design is simple, never showy or overly theatrical. Described as a neo-noir, its palette is cold and its feel is uncompromising. Popes film lingers on close-ups, allowing deep performances to drive the tension. While there is a harshness to its aesthetic, there is also an intimacy to the compositions. Pope visually represents the internal angst of Leighs unwinnable battle between right and wrong, resulting in a nearly amoral lens on violent conflict. By the end, theres a prevailing feeling of senseless. How much of the bloodshed could have been avoided with a different set of decisions? When cornered, Leigh folds into cowardice. Her fear is the architect of her fate. If that fear had not been driving her course of action, the conclusion may not have been drenched in violence and regret. While theres a cautionary tale at play, Im not sure its telling us something we havent heard in similar films depicting revenge stories. I cant help but wonder how much more I would have loved this film had the depth of its themes been more complex and unique. In place of that feeling of senseless or the amoral lens, I found myself wanting the film to make a statement that I could chew on long after the credits rolled. Well-crafted and creeping with tension, Blood on Her Name is a tragic vision of flawed humanity. Theres a quiet desperation that builds into a heartbreaking finale, anchored by Linds profound performance. Fans of rural revenge and backwoods crime, like Blue Ruin or Shotgun Stories, will eat this one up. Dont sleep on it. Blood on Her Name Summary Blood on Her Name is tense, tough, and tender at the same time. With an outstanding performance from its lead, this neo-noir shouldnt be missed.

Blood on her name streaming. Posted on Monday, August 5th, 2019 by Matthew Pope s Blood On Her Name ranks among Americana thrillers such as Blue Ruin, I Dont Belong In This World Anymore, Small Crimes, and other tobacco-stained justice flicks. A modest look into how one decision can change your life forever; sins paid in flesh and blood. Characters all blend into a complicated existence between sympathy and wrongdoing, as Pope holds complication over easily definable boundaries between “good” and “evil. ” In a time when online mob justice demands black-and-white rulings on human affairs, Blood On Her Name reminds us of the sprawling grey area that defines our experience. Tension strung tight enough to slice through a crowd like the opening scene in Ghost Ship. Bethany Anne Lind stars as hard-luck Leigh Tiller, left by her lawbreaking husband to run their family mechanic shop alone. Son Ryan ( Jared Ivers) lends help, a “juvenile delinquent” on parole after beating a bully blind. Already low on customers, Leighs life is shattered to pieces after a junkie threatens harm post-closing. In the act of self-defense, Leigh bashes the attacker with a wrench and kills him. She panics, stashes the body, and doesnt notify badged authorities – headed by her gruff lawman father, Richard Tiller ( Will Patton. Leighs troubles start with a corpse, but complications arise in the form of nosy locals. Angry, vengeful types. Blood On Her Name is never as gruesome as Blue Ruin, Jeremy Saulniers crosshairs comparison point. Violence punctuates drama instead of sets a bloodsoaked tone. Some might consider Popes backwoods caper a “mumblecore mystery” built on character designs over ass-kicking, meant with favorable connotation. We care for Leighs predicament, but then questions arise when Leighs situational allowances usher in blurry logic. A woman made to fend for herself, sacrificing for family, turned a “villain” in the flimsiest of circumstances. Popes rumination on survival taps into helpless realities not asked for but enacted, bringing karmic weight in megatons. I *love* how answers dont appear, left for viewers to ponder. Judgment defines Blood On Her Name, as perceptions project how actors handle their character arcs. Ryans record forever blemished by juvenile incarceration, as his parole officer refuses to see past a “troubled kid” stereotype no matter the reasoning (standing ones ground. Leighs journey is a seesaw of good intentions and miserable decisions, left with no options – and the man she killed? His spouseless, fatherless family? Pattons countryman gunslinger embodies a necessary catalyst in terms of corruption with callous disregard, but its Lind who impresses most. Characterized by a constant grimace, fighting tooth-and-nail, not a stranger to desperation. Both the victim and aggressor with such dispirited rage, stone-faced despite a fire engulfing her insides. The way Pope bloodies salt-of-the-Earth landscapes works minimalism into an efficiency. Trailer parks and empty automotive shops backdrop class warfare between equals. Folks trapped by rural boundaries, backs against the wall and paying a heavy price. Blood On Her Name is as much about a dead body as it is a busted American Dream. Pope remembers those forgotten under violent circumstances and does more than thrill through murderous designs that unravel into a tangled mess of vigilante intrigue. Experience is that of tragedy: familial, impoverished, self-anointed tragedy. Its a feeling that reverberates through Leighs cold stares and raw panic, and a sharp translation of the fears many struggling citizens encounter daily. Blood On Her Name is like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun. If every chamber represents a choice to be made by Leigh, theres a bullet waiting. As ruthless intensity goes, I think you get the gist. Matthew Pope country-fries gutter luck, sizzles up a healthy portion of stand-off tension, and serves one nasty slice of homestyle revenge. Maybe too bleak for some, but sorry. Life isnt all rainbows and Skittles. Kudos to the filmmakers who dont shy away from the lows were forced to stomach and those failed in the process. Damnation by location, never given a choice. /Film Rating: 7. 5 out of 10 Cool Posts From Around the Web.

Theres an entire sub-genre of slow-burn thrillers centered on everyday people forced by circumstance into a life and death world previously unknown to them. More specifically, the films are about a “good” person” who makes a choice — out of anger, greed, foolishness — that sets in motion a bloody chain of events requiring actions and reactions well beyond their wheelhouse. Two of the best in recent years are Blue Ruin (2013) and Bad Day for the Cut (2017) but in addition to being tales fueled by vengeance theyre also ones about men. Director/co-writer Matthew Pope ‘s feature debut, Blood On Her Name, goes counter to both as it focuses instead on a woman simply struggling to do right by her family, but as a tension-filled and devastating look at the inevitability of consequence it absolutely belongs in the same conversation. Leigh ( Bethany Anne Lind) stands over a dead body in the garage she owns. Blood pools from the dead mans head, and while she comes close to calling the police, her fingers hesitate over the phone. Her teenage son Ryan ( Jared Ivers) sits afraid and shaken in another room, and with worries about him, painful memories about her own father ( Will Patton) and the fate of her already struggling business swirling in her head, she decides instead to dispose of the body. Its a decision born from desperation, and its one complicated by her own morality — the dead man has a family of his own, and not wanting to leave them trapped in a purgatory of not knowing what happened to him, she instead returns the body to their shed for them to find. No good deed, as they say. Blood On Her Name wisely drops viewers right at the moment of emotional conflict — the dead man, and the choice that will haunt what follows. Leighs problems began far earlier, though, and the film slowly teases those origins out across its running time revealing her to be a character more informed by her past than defined by it. Some of her issues come as a package deal with being a woman and a daughter, but while they try to pull her backward its her ferocity and determination as a mother that keeps her fighting forward. Popes script (co-written by Don M. Thompson) accomplishes this dynamic best through conversations between friends, family, and strangers, but it stumbles slightly with a handful of flashbacks that struggle to fit the films otherwise starkly pragmatic tone. Were grounded in Leighs reality, a world smeared equally in blood, tears, and grease, and lucid dreams/memories that see her alongside her younger self feel too far removed. Theyre a minor distraction, though, as theyre both infrequent and overshadowed by the rich character interactions revealing far more effectively the weight of family and history. Leighs relationship with her father is especially telling as the source of much of her trouble, but the film wisely refuses to lay it all at his feet. It isnt pointing fingers, and while Leigh is tempted to shes instead compelled to accept her own role in this current predicament. As with 2008s Frozen River, this isnt a film about a female victim as its instead the story of a complex woman weighed down by choice and consequence. Decisions made by the men in her life have undoubtedly helped shape her, but its her own that carry the ultimate weight. Both the script and Popes direction avoid flashiness preferring instead to let tensions and anticipation simmer on their way to outbursts both verbal and violent. Dialogue is economical at times, and while the necessary details come through, the bulk of their power comes packed in exchanges between Leigh and her father. Lind and Patton both give achingly controlled performances here as a daughter and father marked as deeply by their shared trauma as by their individual sins, and while dialogue provides the details its their faces that tell the story. Pattons no stranger to intense characters, and its once again a factor here as his attempt towards mending past transgressions only serves to ratchet things up further. Similarly, Lind plays Leigh as a woman brought her through forces beyond her control — but trapped here through actions of her own. The title is as applicable to her family name as it is to given one, and as she cycles through anger, resentment, guilt, and love, Linds portrayal reveals a woman hellbent on salvaging the scraps of her life and a future that she may not even be a part of. Guilt, PTSD, and a desperate desire to avoid a cycle of violence make for a powerful combination, and Lind makes her a woman worth caring about instead of one worth pitying. One quick note… Leighs choices throughout the film are the kind prone to critical scoffing — “thats dumb, Id never do that” — but as with the other films mentioned above theyre the kinds of choices made by real, average people in desperate situations well beyond their wheelhouse. Its easy to point out “dumb” decisions on the screen from the comfort of our couch, but the only thing that matters is whether we believe these characters would make these choices under these conditions. Leighs situation is clear, her options are ugly, and shes fueled by a single-minded goal. We believe her, and what follows is all the more tragic because of it. Blood On Her Name is a beautifully told tale of family, crime, and the price we sometimes pay for both. Elements here are shared with other, similar films featuring unprepared people in unfamiliar situations, but it stands as part of a very select grouping of movies that focus on a womans perspective. Its ultimately a sad film, one infused with suspense and humanity, but that female perspective carries through to the very last line as an unexpected and haunting expression of guilt and concern.
